Arturo Escobar

Arturo Escobar, a Colombian-American anthropologist and the Kenan Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, presents a new vision of design theory which advocates for reconfiguring current design practices in the hopes of a more just and sustainable social order. Such a design attends to questions of environment, experience, and politics while focusing on the production of human experience based on the radical interdependence of all beings.

  • Faculty and S-LTAs can use Escobar’s work to incorporate a sociological analysis of Boston neighborhoods to help students better address the needs of the communities they are supporting, as opposed to assuming a community’s needs based off one’s inherent biases.
